Santa’s arrival in the Desert

It’s that time again! Every year the Irish Society hosts an extravaganza evening of ‘Santa in the Desert’. This year was no exception.

Families with children of all ages descended in the gentle heat of the desert - welcomed by a huge bonfire and glittering Christmas tree. The glow of the flashing lights were strategically placed so as to guide Santa to the children. I’m sure the burning embers of the bonfire and the riotous noise from the children was enough for him to find his way!

Adults and children of all nationalities were soon getting into the spirit of Christmas and singing their hearts out to Declan’s guitar-playing. Even those less blessed with singing talent, joined along to entertain the nearby camels!

As night fell, the children and adults waited patiently for the big arrival. All of a sudden there was the sound of  ”Ho Ho Ho…!”. The children were so excited they could barely speak – they just stared in amazement. Santa arrived with lots of presents, wished everyone a Happy Christmas and expressed hope that all the girls and boys were on their best behaviour before Christmas Eve.

It was time for Santa to leave as his long and arduous journey wasn’t over yet – he had to travel all over the world to deliver presents to all the other boys and girls. The weary children waved him good bye and sent him on his merry way. Mums and Dads began to take their exhausted children home. However, some families pitched their tents and decided to stay the night continuing to sing carols around the bonfire, cherishing the spirit of Christmas in the desert a while longer.

The only question that threw me was when a delightful little girl asked me if I was Santa’s wife as I was wearing a Santa hat.  I told her Santa doesn’t have a wife! As his reindeer took off into the deep dark sky – I mused to myself; if I could be Santa’s wife for a day – I would ask for the best present in the world. PEACE at this time of year. Merry Xmas everyone………….
